Class of 07 Forever! Never Change!

The fifth graders are starting to put their yearbook together. Each of the kids gets a half page and they say what they want to be when they grow up (lots of pro baseball or football players, teachers, and interestingly enough, one fisherman) and what their most memorable moment at school was. It's sort of like what I remember from high school yearbooks, when some people try to subtly work in how they lost their virginity in various cringe-worthy ways like "David, 2/14/94, ILY." But my students are still young enough that their memorable moments are hysterical, like "when Brian McCartney drank my milk" or "feeding bread to those ducks but then one died."

Speaking of yearbook scandal, my friend Katie's boyfriend at the time put something so nauseating and over-the-top in his senior quote that it's burned into my brain to this day: "Katie, my heart and soul are forever filled with the deepest and truest love for you and only you until the end of time. I love you so much." Not sure why he felt the need to drive the point home with that second sentence but oh, it made for yearbook gold. Granted, I quoted St. Elmo's Fire and My So-Called Life in mine, so who am I to talk? What did you guys put in yours? A bunch of initials and inside jokes that now mean nothing? Liz Phair/Dead Milkmen/Bryan Adams lyrics? Declarations of love for people you'd broken up with a month later? Inquiring minds want to know.

And speaking of high school, my friend and I are going to New York next weekend, where we'll each see a plethora of high school friends. Between the two of us we have four friends in the city and somehow all of them are having parties on Saturday night. What are the odds? As she said, we're going to be like Paris Hilton, minus the herpes and stuff.

We actually didn't do yearbook quotes in my school (or "most likely to" lists or anything like that), and thinking about it now, I'm sort of glad of that, I guess.

Have fun in New York. Since you mentioned living like Ms. Hilton, do I need to remind you also to wear underwear? (I hope not.)

Mine was a Dr. Seuss quote - "I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I Am." Not sure why except that I've always loved him - it didn't have any deep philosophical meaning to me!

I don't even remember what I wrote to anyone... probably something like "Stay cool and in touch. Class of ## is Totally Awesome!!!" Lame.

ugh. I had an Edna St. Vincent Millay poem, for which all of my friends STILL make fun of me. Good work, nerd!

Oooo... I wish I had thought to put Liz Phair lyrics in people's yearbooks. "Fuck and Run" would have been *awesome*.

Wow I can't believe I'm repeating this, but...my senior quote was from the song in the very beginning of 'A League of Their Own'...it said 'We Shared A Moment, Just One Moment, That Will Last Beyond A Dream, Beyond A Lifetime.' Yup, that was it...nice, huh? Ah, and let's not forget that my best friend and I were voted 'Class Twins.' Gosh, could I have been any cooler?

Mine was something retarded like "keep some memories of the past or how will you ever prove it wasn't all a dream" or something. Ew. Not to mention I have the memory of a gnat, so a lot of good that did me!

I quoted the Doors in mine. Sweet Jesus. I'll have to find the exact quote, because I can't remember at the moment. Apparently, I've blocked it out.

I quoted Nietsche as quoted by Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison in The Doors. It was lame on, like, eleven different levels.

We didn't do yearbook quotes. And, actually, my last 2 years in high school, the yearbooks didn't even get printed until the middle of the summer, so if you wanted them signed, you had to bring them back to school with you the next fall. Which almost none of us did, so it just looks like we were very, very unpopular. ;)

On the plus side, there's much less written documentation of how very uncool I was. Hee.

I quoted some band whose name I can't remember from a song that I can't recll. The quote was: "If you want to be somebody else, change your mind."

I was a "don't rock the boat" kind of person, so I didn't say anything cute or cheeky.
